Music Prays for Me

I have sat down on my apartment floor countless times with a weight on my heart that I don’t know how to pray for.

I cry.

I stare blindly at the wall.

I try to find words other “God help”

And God answers with a song.

I’m not a half bad singer. But singing a song while I am ugly crying is rough. It’s embarrassing. Its hardly a song.

But it is exactly the words of my heart. And it gives me the comfort and strength that I need.

There is a beautiful verse in Romans that talks about how the Holy Spirit prays for us when we don’t have the words.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
Romans 8:26‭-‬27 NIV

This is one of many ways that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. He prays for us when we have no words. He feels our pain and comforts us.

Music is an amazing gift given to us by God. David himself sang his fears, his worries, and his pain when praying just wasn’t enough.

I call on you, my God, for you will answer me;
    turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.
Show me the wonders of your great love,
    you who save by your right hand
    those who take refuge in you from their foes.

Psalm 17: 6-7

My favorite form of worship is playing my guitar. I got my guitar as a 16th birthday gift, and I had no idea how to play. I bled on her before I even played my first song, and she has been my constant companion ever since.

Playing my guitar lets me simply be with God. It lets my heart be free to sing and worship my Father. Though there are many forms of worship that we have been given, I believe music is a special gift that we should all use.

I want to encourage you to listen to music more often. Sing more often. Even if you sound like a dying duck. Music can speak when we cannot. Music can pray for us when we don’t have the words.
